Does anyone have a proper arch-nemesis like on TV shows? A sneering, mocking long-arc adversary who makes elaborate plans to mess with you and says things like “we’re the same, you and I” when cornered (or “come out, come out wherever you are” when chasing you)?

You're right, a bunch of those 'super-villains' don't really have all that much actual interest in crime. It's just targeted personal harassment of The Batman.

This is really interesting. Think the first one is Moriarty--a prototype. Then there's sneer-at-the-cops, an emergent trope in RL (Ripper, Albert Fish) and fiction (dime novels post 1870). Mix and--villain speech is really truncated. Outgrowth of growth in comics?

I wonder if Edison/Tesla was like this? More generally the types of rivalries that were mostly executed through angry letters and gossip?
