Does anyone have a proper arch-nemesis like on TV shows? A sneering, mocking long-arc adversary who makes elaborate plans to mess with you and says things like “we’re the same, you and I” when cornered (or “come out, come out wherever you are” when chasing you)?

What’s the origin of this weird archetype? It’s not a normal kind of adversary like say a king with a rivalry with another king, or competing sports stars. I can’t think of any real relationship that looks like this. Stalking is close but that’s generally a sex thing.

Newton / Hooke comes to mind. Newton hated Hooke when he was alive and after he died ensured that no portraits of Hooke survived. Newton did his best to erase Hooke, and did it so well that many of Hooke’s contributions were not recognized until hundreds of years later.

Our family friend had an arch-nemesis. They were pregnant at the same time and her nemesis stole the name “Patrick” so that even though our friend’s baby was born ON March 17th, he is named Daniel. He’s a full grown adult now, but I remember that story always.

Had one colleague who imagined this to be the case.
Learned a lot about myself from her.

There's a Louis Theroux documentary called Miami Mega Jail where one of the inmates describes an attempted murder due to her being his nemesis. Should be on BritBox if you are interested.
