Interesting proposition at any rate. I do think there’s a lower limit. I suspect it’s closer to $20 though.

I had a service engine light a month ago that seemed like a dirty or bad EGR valve or something connected to it.
Would have been a $200+ fix at the shop.
I did it for $48 with a new valve and ten minutes with a socket wrench.
$150 is worth ten minutes to me.

(I say seems like because I had a code reader which narrowed it down to the EGR valve, but those indicators are never very precise and can end up in a wild goose chase. But $48 and a month later and no new service engine light or code.)

Depends. I can DIY a $70 blanket ladder for $7 and about 1 hour of my time.
Pretty good ROI, yeah?
But I had $1,500 of CAPEX (in tools) to get there. :P
