Okay, I nerdsniped myself with this random side thought in my thread earlier about bearing witness to homelessness of the extreme, unraveled variety. twitter.com/vgr/status/135…

Ok, thought of a simpler way to say it. Your generalized self is bounded by a clear function that separates "part-of-me stuff" from "part of the environment" where the "me" is your extended idea of self in that context.

So for eg if you're married, your financial self is probably highly commingled with your partner, so you "self" includes both of you. But email/messaging self? Probably not unless you're over 70 (my parents share a digital-communication self)

Being (not literally) homeless is a close personal meme for me. My ethnic, linguistic and local identity has been scrambled since childhood. Migrating, changing schools, being a foreigner everywhere. Being early, deeply online. Belonging is an aspiration i've long abandoned.

the game company I work for is pretty hive mind-like. I don’t really have any conception of my project vs someone else’s project, and having such a conception would mark me as politically dangerous.

"Homelessness" is also losing control and power over yourself and your stuff. Think: encampment police sweeps, where others remove your tools/artifacts without your consent and you are powerless to stop them. Or "movealongs" because a homeowner called 911.
