What works: "Y is important/interesting enough to be given the sincere-best-faith treatment, so I'm going to do that, and if any further doors open up as a result, I might walk through one of them"

There really is a reform/revolution inflection point in every practical context, all the way from 'this program is shit, I could make a better one starting from scratch' to 'no gods, no masters!' It's just that the more complex the context the harder the latter is.
