Robert McKee is the Antoine Jomini of storytelling. No notion of strategic intuition informs the theory. It’s pure tactical prowess extrapolated to strategy via brute-force structural scaffolding.
Is there a storytelling Clausewitz or Boyd?

Matthew Dicks could be Boyd. Extremely lucid book.

I own that. It's better than McKee, but it still doesn't hit the sweet spot I'm thinking of. The Campbell structural framework is sort of "strategy aware" but not itself about narrative strategy. Just about a structure that's good at carrying it.

There are tons of Boyds, getting inside the reader's reaction loop is a core suspense methodology.

I don’t mean natural practitioners. I mean natural practitioners with the self-awareness to model and teach what they do. Much rarer by orders of magnitude.

I don't want to tell you because I'd be jealous if you mastered its wisdom before I did ...
... But Let The Story Do The Work by I found to be the best book on writing better stories (more how than why)
