Few people are consciously selfish. When in doubt, almost everybody errs on the side of kindness in proportion to pain. People only differ in self-awareness about how they weight and rank the pain of all involved, especially themselves, and how hard they work to see hidden pain.

A degree of prioritization of your own pain is a practical necessity. But the marginal value of putting yourself first goes down fairly quickly once basic material and safety needs are met. Those who continue prioritizing themselves past that tend to be broken in basic ways.

I wish this were true.
Perhaps was before the widespread adoption of agriculture.
Or perhaps we disagree about what constitutes consciousness of one’s actions.
It would be great though.
