I just read the original H. P. Lovecraft The Call of Cthulhu story for the first time. I didn't realize it was just a longish short story (11k words). It is really good, modulo lurid 1920s race anxieties. I can see why it's been so influential. hplovecraft.com/writings/texts

I watched a couple of episodes of the Lovecraft Country show. It didn’t really land IMO. But the basic conceit of an updated version of the mythos would be interesting to see executed well.

There is a mention of “strange non-Euclidean geometries” and “an acute angle that looked obtuse.” I was not aware Lovecraft/fantasy/horror took inspiration from things like relativity in the 1920s just as straight-up sci-fi did. Interesting that no direct reference to Freud/Jung.

Because Lovecraft is out of copyright his film festival is the head of independent weird filmmaking. Every year there is always something interesting released. They go off in interesting directions.
