What do you call it when you take a reputable brand and swap out the quality product it is based on and substitute an inferior product, taking the temporary profits before people catch on? It’s not harvesting the brand. More like shorting brand equity via an insider trade.

just asked a bunch of marketing friends you could look at like breyers icecream going from great to trash they say it would just be a transition or rebranding, but it's rarely even discussed in-company outside of defending the transition

The difference is that diffusion is about selling a low-quality good to unsophisticated buyers while maintaining the high-quality line for more informed buyers. This was originally done via venue segmentation (retail vs fake liquidators) but now sub-brands.
