This system probably uses a combination of permanent magnets(for levitation) and electromagnets(actively controlled for lateral stability, suspension). Relying on magnetic attraction from perm magnets is more efficient. Also inherently provides more lateral stability
The pod probably only uses linear induction motor(s) for forward acceleration, the only power used for levitation is for suspension and lateral control, which reduces the energy required, reducing battery weight, reducing the force needed to levitate
Also, the new @virginhyperloop design seems like you could easily switch the passenger pod out with something that could be used for cargo. Their whole levitation/propulsion platform looks to be very configurable
