Something about this strikes me as very ironic and funny. The pessimists’ problems are *caused* by the narrowly Darwinist horizons of the optimists. The optimists can enjoy family in part because pessimists feel duty bound to work on problems they don’t have a genetic stake in.

This strikes me as off, or at least incomplete. The family optimists could be attending school board meetings and other pro-politic activities while the pessimists are home shaking their fists at the television.
