In Neuromancer (and the bit of Peripheral I read before abandoning it) I got a sense of high-tech-low-life protagonists. DevOps types who might also care about tattoos and punk hairstyles for eg. In Cryptonomicon and Diamond Age otoh I mostly got “unpleasant middle-class types”

I don't understand the OP. The Gamestop Event is strikingly similar to the global financial superstructure in William Gibson's "The Peripheral" – first thing I thought of, really.

In Gibson, people are having bad vanilla noir sex. In Stephenson, people are having fun kinky nerd sex. That's about it.

Gibsonian, underclass is passively exploited & ignored and is struggling to forge identity through the fog of technologies - Stephensonian, underclass is actively exploited & toyed with and is full of self-importance, memes, fashions, and etc. Desperate vs smarmy?
