My favorite characters are deft impressionist sketches that are archetypes bordering on caricatures. Cartoons basically. You find them in unusual places. Dickens is literary but his characters are basically cartoons.

Yeah. Most English-speaking Indians my age are. Along with Agatha Christie he is the entry point for adult English fiction in India. I’d pretty much read everything by him by age 21.

Even small English libraries in India tend to have a complete collection. They circulate heavily. Half my nerdy friends from college are deep experts in the Wodehouse canon, can quote extensively, and many like writing Indianized pastiches.
