Why do many raptors (most eagles, some owls) have what humans read as menacing expressions? Doesn’t seem adaptive since it’s not like they use expressive intimidation to hunt rodents or fish.

But big cats and canids are not permanently scary looking. They have expressive range from cuddly kitten to snarly intimidation when hunting. There I think there’s actually a correlation between emotional state and affect.

Maybe predator eyes (eyes close together on the front of head) read as threatening for evolutionary reasons. Prey eyes (side of head) read cute since they won't hurt us. One reason why bunnies are cute.

I'd imagine it's a lack of a trait (an expressive face) moreso than a trait itself.
