The “razor blade” strategy (cheap handles, expensive razors) was the smartest strategy in business until Simplehuman rolled out the “expensive trash cans, extremely expensive bags” strategy.
Polaroid Land Cameras were the highest rung on this ladder: very cheap camera, extremely expensive film packs for which there were no generic substitutes.
That’s different though. It was a unique camera that was had no comparable anyway. The pricing was a function of unique technology rather than business model.
