The Spot dog robot from Boston dynamics costs ~$70,000 (base, no payload) and is marketed for inspection work.

Come to think of it dogs are a pretty useless form factor unless you’re a hunter. Their main no-companion feature is their nose. If you could put just the nose at the end of a stick, you’d dispense with the furry backend.

A monkey might have been better. Can climb. Could add a prehensile tail. Still, it’s cool and general enough I’d buy one if the price came down to like $1000 and it was much smaller for domestic indoor use. Chihuahua class rather than golden retriever.

Usually easier to move the workpiece than the robot

When the inspection site is dangerous to put sensors. But I couldn’t think of other use caseshttps://twitter.com/anurajenp/status/1322195620757647360 …

Are they using it because it’s useful, or because it’s cool?

It's almost as if approximating the capacities of humans doesn't play to the advantages of robots and fails to be price competitive with the real thing.

I still like biomorphic robots, just maybe not as a business solution type product. They’re much more open-ended.

Wheeled robots are constrained by terrain. A dog or a legged robot can climb objects or stairs. Drones could be a solution but then their flight times are limited for now.

Thinking too gig. At BigCo, a purchasing concern worth hundreds of thousands of dollars is how much you can make your server room tour look like an LED factory threw up in the dark. Robo dogs walking past the tour group is definitely worth more than $70k.
