Setting aside the debate on principles, the deplatforming is a "free" strategic option... a lot of the consequences people are fearing had already happened by around 2018 (hardcores going dark etc), this isn't acceleration, it's a common-knowledge moment.

Just because you're noticing now doesn't mean it's happening now. Just because the consequences are apparent to you now doesn't mean they are happening in the future. People more invested in this conflict saw this coming 3 years ago and already acted. The dregs are catching up.

All that's changed is that the consensus surrounding what constitutes a hate group has become ambiguous...or rather that the lines between 'hate group' and 'mainstream political constituency' blurred. Regardless, divisive rhetoric has never been good for business.
