You should check out the Exordium series by Smith and Trowbridge, and THE DRAGON NEVER SLEEPS by Glen Cook.

Would recommend Revelation Space series by Alastair Reynolds. Great mix of very hard scifi/space opera and big ideas.

As much as I love #theMandalorian, unless I’m missing the logic behind the list, Firefly deserves to take its place. It checks both the fun and philosophy boxes, against a much more deeply developed societal background.
