I’d really like to read a book titled “seeing like a storyteller.” How do you walk around with an eye open for story fodder? Like Douglas Adam’s’ biscuits story. How do you sensitize yourself to this kind of dramatic potential in milder instances?https://www.google.com/amp/s/theoldvillage.wordpress.com/2004/01/28/douglas-adams-shares-a-true-story/amp/ …

Omg yessss, my favorite ex's are interviews w/ Michael Pollan & Margaret Atwood. Pollan bc he puts himself in the readers' shoes of being a naivete (almost an idiot) to see what's good story fodder. Atwood bc she's a WIZARD at telling the same scene in five different ways

Stand-ups are probably the best bet to learn from in this instance. A unique flair to embellish the mild to hilarity.

Re capitalizing on true-enough personal stories, Dave Chappelle (and other people) could write it. I vaguely remember that Scott Adams may even have a brief section about this in his book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big. I could be misremembering, though.

It is worth noting that the biscuits story doesn’t appear to originate with Douglas Adams. It has the feel of a long-circulating joke. (Adams did claim it happened to him, which I suppose isn’t impossible.)

I have heard an M&M story on plane in US, in a speech and saw a Hindi video in which one guy mistakes anothers sweets box for his. I was thinking of this story while reading the post and turns out to be related. Must have been the "biscuits" that made the subconscious connection.

a lifetime of sharing such stories with eager listeners in good company? or is that off the table. i've noticed storytelling can be shared as a family trait, for example.

Some families (and friend groups?) apparently have a culture of trying to outdo each other with outrageous and hilarious personal stories. Powerful extended training ground and crucible.

It's easy, just configure your phone to play dramatic music when you're close to novel events.

You could start by listening to Jordan Peterson's lectures on Maps of Meaning. Astonishing stuff. Begins with a multi-hour exegesis of what's really going on in Pinocchio.

Short answer is, you have to learn. Start carrying around a notebook and jotting down details. Then flip through it often before you sit down to write. Trite, trite advice, but it's true. Seen it personally too many times to count. Also, this is one part of about 8 million parts.
