While I’m enjoying the realism of The Expanse, I’ll admit I miss “shields down to 60%” and “warp core offline” campytech.

People with mixed-race looks have strong acting career prospects right now in near-future sci-fi. When the story is written for such a cast, it really works well. This main cast is a soup of interestingly ambiguous looks and names. Identifiable race people look awkward.

Weirdly, this has ruined Firefly for me. That show has a similar aesthetic but is much shallower and weaker... it’s the middle of the barbell. Either go full camp like Star Trek or full drama like The Expanse. Post-Civil war re-enactment cowboys in space doesn’t endure.

the hamfisted use of chinese language and imagery is bad enough, but then confederacy apologia becomes impossible to unsee. It really hasn’t aged well.

Yeah once I saw that, it kinda ruined it for me, though apologia is a bit of an exaggeration. It’s at least sympathetically inspired. Kinda like Gone With the Wind.

I think the “middle barbell”-ness is what kept me from really digging the show. The show straddled the intersection of too many genres without fitting into any of them.
