People with mixed-race looks have strong acting career prospects right now in near-future sci-fi. When the story is written for such a cast, it really works well. This main cast is a soup of interestingly ambiguous looks and names. Identifiable race people look awkward.

Weirdly, this has ruined Firefly for me. That show has a similar aesthetic but is much shallower and weaker... it’s the middle of the barbell. Either go full camp like Star Trek or full drama like The Expanse. Post-Civil war re-enactment cowboys in space doesn’t endure.

The Expanse is exactly how we should hope the future will be (minus some parts). Space is way too dangerous to start problems over silly things like race and gender.
