Have you ever come face-to-face with people of the sort who do this sort of thing? I have, a few times, and it’s like trying to respond to being engaged by an actor on stage, or interacting with a stand-up comic or magician who decides to pick you out of audience.

There’s a sense of being expected to guess and play a part that’s been scripted for you in their fiction. Except there’s no backstage or ‘off’ persona you can relate to. You either play along or you don’t exist in their world. You’re turned off as performance-disrupting noise.

Performer on stage: some line from their act
Me (unsure, aside to neighboring spectator): “Line...?”
Neighbor: “Just mention Soros”
Me: “Uhh... ok... according to the Open Society Foundation...”
Performer: “AHA! YOU WORK FOR SOROS!”

This is such a good description. The most disturbing part is the looks on their faces. They don’t understand the gravity of their actions. These people are completely disconnected from reality
