Prediction: Neither Trump, nor his death-cult will suffer any consequences for this. They’ll retreat and turn into a chronic sedition movement that will repeatedly erupt into a low-grade terrorist insurgency. They’re too far gone in their alt-reality to ever be rehabilitated.

These people really do present as mentally ill. I saw my first hardcore Trumpie ranting on a Seattle bus in 2016 (crazed derelict looking middle-aged white woman screaming “Trump will win and you’ll all pay”), and every interaction since has been similar.

The well-adjusted Trumpies who talk about how “but the economy... and he has done good things on China...” always were guilty of one big thing: radically underestimating the extent to which the mentally-ill were in charge of the wagon they’d hitched their ride to.

You manage what you measure and if you’re inclined to dismiss illegible glitches on the margins of what you measure as noise, it will grow to a roar and swamp out the signal you’re overindexing on. Take the crazies seriously and literally. Keep the apologists at arm’s length.

There’s a more dangerous sort of apologist who recognized the danger of the crazies but used personal wealth to secure their own circumstances, and rationalized their upside as natural moral rewards and the downside to less-fortunate others as a movie to watch on New Zealand TV.

I never want to hear from the likes of Peter Thiel again tbf. And much as I’d like to see Trump marched out of the WH in handcuffs, pragmatically I’d like him to slink off in obscurity rather than turned into a martyr for civil-war re-enacting nazilite morons.

not mental illness or crazies -- former stigmatizes latter diminishes but your point re taking seriously and literally is well taken! agree re keeping apologists away
