How did Miami suddenly turn into a new schelling point for tech migrants? It wasn’t even on my radar (and still isn’t — something seems way off)

Interesting to see all the theories but it seems to be just efforts by Keith Rabois and the mayor to make fetch happen. There’s no there there afaict, though a lot of supportive wishful thinking (“if this were a real trend, X might explain it”).
Let’s see if fake it —> make it

No personal income tax in Fla + nice weather + cosmopolitan and diverse culture and arts/restaurant/food scene. It’s basically what the bay area offered before many of the cool people were priced out

Yeah I’m a (lowly) tech employee who moved here from NYC in August. The weather is so fucking incredible it should be more populated. And it’s walkable w/ amenities. That being said, just signed a lease for ATX. We don’t know anyone in MIA and hard to meet in pandemic

It’s just cold. Florida summer is terrible. Only possibility is that the seasonal nomad thing is happening. For east coasters Florida is in our brains as a reward for retirement.

Keith is from NJ. Guarantee he had fun visiting a grandparent in Florida when he was a kid. Watch the birthplaces of the people that move there. Predict a lot of CT NY NJ MA
