Lately there’s been a gradual uptick in young(er) people asking me for “advice” and a steady decline in my energy to be helpful in any way. So I made up a convenient boilerplate advice table to blow them off with.
this is earnestpost... I'll probably refine it a bit and put it on ribbonfarm. It's not meant to contain any new thinking... more of a tldr summary of the general drift of past writing. Long-time readers... did I miss any key idea from old writing?
The biggest structural problem with this boilerplate is it doesn't capture the open-loop couplings between stages (stuff you should do in stage n but won't really see the effects of till stage n+1 at least, so it seems pointless in the moment)
I feel like Act 2 is disproportionately long. But I suppose you just started that act I your own life, so are still defining it. I suspect 58-70 will differentiate as an “Act 3” based on markedly diminishing physical capacity and mature acceptance of Act 2 conditions.
yeah, you're probably right... otoh it is disproportionately long in time, but since learning rate slows, in "learning time" 28y in mid life is probably like 14y in early life.
Earnest but maybe dumb question: sorry but how is the stuff in the “dark” column “advice” exactly? Is it advice in the sense of “watch out and don’t fall prey to this”? Or advice in the sense of “it sucks but you may as well get used to it”? Something else ?
If you squint, doesn't "Make Your Own Rules" necessarily line-up with lifecycle phases? I'd assume the "light" path would include having "your own rules."
