The biggest structural problem with this boilerplate is it doesn't capture the open-loop couplings between stages (stuff you should do in stage n but won't really see the effects of till stage n+1 at least, so it seems pointless in the moment)

Be as earnest as you can be while young and learning. Develop cynicism as needed to protect yourself and your time, but keep an open mind. Remember the goal of cynicism is to save your energy so you can focus it elsewhere. Dont let it take over.
