this is earnestpost... I'll probably refine it a bit and put it on ribbonfarm. It's not meant to contain any new thinking... more of a tldr summary of the general drift of past writing. Long-time readers... did I miss any key idea from old writing?

The biggest structural problem with this boilerplate is it doesn't capture the open-loop couplings between stages (stuff you should do in stage n but won't really see the effects of till stage n+1 at least, so it seems pointless in the moment)

u could use light/dark crossings on this table to map character arcs: Michael Clayton = dark adulthood -> light act2; Inside Out kid = light childhood -> dark adolescence -> light adolescence ("learn to regulate emotions" !); Nightcrawler = dark emerging adult -> light adult;

I think this is less so advice than it is displaying bluntly two contrasting realities. also, you captured the first two parts of my life pretty well - wow. never realized they were considered so dark. 😱

the darkness hits you as you start to recognize the significance of how much damage it did and how much repair work is needed to get back to the light side
