Watching a really bad B movie Keanu Reeves was tricked into doing in 2000, The Watchers. One of the clearest tells is that the background score sounds very dated for the time. Like 1970s or something. You can get away with cheap production and hokey effects but bad music kills.
I wonder to what extent “bad” in a rapidly evolving medium like film is simply “dated.” Unlike text, film seems to be a extra prone to this. It’s not like a mannered style but more like using an old-fashioned font.
some films seem to do it well - 80s music in Guardians in the Galaxy, Stranger things with the 80s call back.
That’s deliberate though, and in the mfireground sound track. I’m talking background score — stuff like suspense music, intro themes, victory music etc.
Great music (including scores) doesn’t get dated easily either. If it feels dated it’s probably just mediocre music. I got to listen a bit to the Rocky score as a family member became interested, and it’s from the 70s (that, you can tell) but it’s still great.
