History will label the early 21st century The Age of Derping Tribes. "They built out the 'Net and used it to restate priors ad infinitum"

Do you have anything that goes into detail on your definition of 'derping'? I see bits and piece of this everywhere, but wanna be able to cite something substantive on that idea. I watched the relevant south park episode the night it was aired.

Being able to identify derping seems quite useful. I notice it the most in "outgroup bad" style rhetoric. Any ideas on how to fight the tendency? I think it drives demon seeds and contextual scissor statements and those scare me. One trigger?:https://twitter.com/alexeyguzey/status/1028946124785246208 …

probably a useful skill to cultivate, and that seems to be a good heuristic, but I find it easier to simply disengage when I notice myself or the other person derping... if the state of play is going to change in a way that moves my counter, I'm content to wait for it passively

I think what I'm trying to fight is when members of my following end up acting as gatekeepers / policing me from having meaningful conversation with various outgroup members. Self-reifying mook/knight effect. 'Tribal derping' as emergent internet of beef phenomena?
