Being able to identify derping seems quite useful. I notice it the most in "outgroup bad" style rhetoric. Any ideas on how to fight the tendency? I think it drives demon seeds and contextual scissor statements and those scare me.

probably a useful skill to cultivate, and that seems to be a good heuristic, but I find it easier to simply disengage when I notice myself or the other person derping... if the state of play is going to change in a way that moves my counter, I'm content to wait for it passively
