I don't think the challenge has gotten harder... my inbox volume has remained roughly consistent, but the mix of carrots and sticks has changed, and there's more stuff that need semi-auto-processing (receipts, bills, statements to download...and of course newsletters)

I just don't care as much to stay on top of email. So I only really get on top of it when the risk of a bad screw-up starts to mount.

Did you stop using email as a to-do list? When you decouple inbox from to-do then it becomes safe to just ignore it
