Robert McKee is the anti-Keith-Johnstone. Both in his theories of storytelling and how he teaches them. It’s an exhausting grind, like reading an encyclopedia cover to cover. Left vs right-brained writing. Kinda like regular art instruction vs Betty Edwards right-brain drawing.

I don’t think anyone can learn fiction writing from McKee but his stuff is likely great for analyzing and fixing writing that isn’t working. It’s teaching surgery.

McKee is definitely that school. I could never write like this, but I’m reading and taking notes anyway because it feels like a good toolkit if I get stuck.
