This is interesting. NYC is probably the only city in the world I’ve felt like a 100% bored alien in, and not even remotely at home. If there’s an opposite of home, NYC is it for me. Visits over the years were mildly fun but I’ve never felt the slightest desire to live there.

i didnt realize you felt that way, but i guess it makes sense. seems to be much more polarizing than other US cities

I think New Yorkers *want* it to be way more polarizing than it is. Theyre really into themselves and assume all love it or hate-envy it. But it’s a basic meh for me. Same as pro football or nascar. A complex thing with a devout fandom that leaves me meh.pic.twitter.com/Gic9n0rhqp

I think it’s a hangover from an era when it was genuinely the center of the cultural universe in some way. Now it’s mostly a self-absorbed sideshow. Like a once quirky charming old uncle who hasn’t quite realized his shtick has lost appeal outside his circle.

I can’t imagine Woody Allen/Friends/Seinfeld type presumption of the city’s importance today.

i actually think Seinfeld (and similar shows) validate your "self-absorbed sideshow" theory - the characters aren't ever doing anything special, they just think it's special, but they look ridiculous to outside observers

Well it felt natural until ~1998-2000/9-11 I guess. Remember it was before the internet truly took over. The idea of a physical city pretending to be the center of the universe all-roads-lead-to-Rome style didn’t seem quite so anachronistic then.
