Twitter avatars are only popular with a small niche of users. Something about that niche must correlate with the specific cutesy-twee anime style. Maybe some sort of outward projection of subconscious self-reflection?

Memes are inherently inelegant and convey null aesthetic. Anime otoh is non-null elegance.
