Twitter avatars are only popular with a small niche of users. Something about that niche must correlate with the specific cutesy-twee anime style. Maybe some sort of outward projection of subconscious self-reflection?

Also, memes/avatars work on efficient signs/signals. Because of this they’re self-replicative, tending to fewest high-recognition elements. Memes/Avatars work by flattening expressive dimensionality/variety into rigid formats and valued based on creativity within those restraints
