A few people have asked how I take these pictures. It takes a lot of luck. For a couple of months in the winter on the few sunny days, the light comes from just the right angle for just a couple of minutes a day. Here's one taken two minutes too early, still with some direct sun.pic.twitter.com/tNaQ4W3svW
The crow is on a rock in front of a dark pine forest. Once the direct light is gone, the forest fades to black with a high-contrast blue filter. They're shot at very high ISO—around 16,000. Below, a shot from two years ago, and a shot from yesterday. No luck last year.pic.twitter.com/kFp2UTABsF
To answer camera/lens questions: The ones from today are shot with a Nikon D850 + Nikkor 500 f/5.6 PF. The lens is a bit of overkill; the ones from two years ago, including the two images below, were taken using a Nikkor 300mm f/4.pic.twitter.com/jppvcVh43X
The light wasn't quite as good today, but good enough to get something at least.pic.twitter.com/Bh2ro2OIo5
A number of people have asked if I sell prints. At present, I don't, *but* I'm happy to share the high resolution images files for you print your own. For these, I've used http://Bayphoto.com , printed on metal in semi-gloss finish. They come out beautifully.pic.twitter.com/0tCKWDo4h7
Just send me a DM (if for some reason it doesn't go through, try my email) and I'll send you the files. If you're able, please consider making a small donation to one of two wildlife rescue organizations listed below.
