Poll: What would you say is the atomic unit of storytelling, the smallest meaningful slice of plot?
What’s an atomic conflict though? You can have conflict at all levels. It’s the atomic structure I’m interested in.

There’s no story without conflict, struggle. Ok, it’s also a principle. “I’d like to eat an apple” is just a description. If you add “the apple disagrees” you got conflict, then a story. Or maybe the apple is plotting revenge, or its family will hate me, or the apple is rotten.

I don’t think you’re getting the idea of atomicity. I agree conflict is important. I don’t think you’ve explained how it is the atomic structure.
