def excited about the promise of the mRNA platform but lol you couldn't choose two worse targets to try it on than universal flu and HIVhttps://twitter.com/SaadOmer3/status/1330667122083631104 …

might be nice for seasonal flu? idk, not sure whether it would actually have any advantage there but nothing I have seen in 2020 makes me any more hopeful about a universal flu vaccine or an HIV vaccine than I already was

he might be talking about funding instead? I’m not at all an expert but i get the impression funding is often a fairly significant roadblock.

both universal flu and HIV vax research are quite well funded more would be welcome ofc but the roadblocks here are purely scientific

these are not "well it's hard but if you throw money at it's feasible" problems, they're "we do not know if this is even remotely possible" problems

also “feedback loops are very long” problems. I have a friend who did her PhD on cell-free systems in universal flu vaccine development. She is pretty excited by the ability to turn around product way faster though her specific project didn’t work

feedback loop is kinda huge. my wife does behavioural neuroscience and i do code, so her loop is months at least and mine is seconds. i’d drown in that environment.
