In what appears to be a talk to civil servants Modi warns against allure of social media fame and media exposure (didn’t know that was an issue) and urges an ethos of anonymous service. Ironically he’s got best media game of any Indian PM I can recall, going back to Indira Gandhihttps://twitter.com/ghuubear/status/1330545960448102402 …

He sounds more and more like a sage philosopher every time I hear him speak. He really is a very effective speaker. Neatly weaves a couple of philosophical ideas with down-to-earth actionable things each time. His record of governance is decidedly mixed, but he sure sells it well

Modi is channelling a very Yuval Levin conception of decline in institutional capacity and trust as a consequence of institutions losing the capacity to mold character and becoming platforms for performance instead.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/18/opinion/sunday/institutions-trust.html …

Good overall point, but a bit of motte and bailey though. Easy to argue that baseball should mold character for baseball. It’s harder to make a case that molding is self-evidently good for journalists or politicians. The mold may be good internally but bad for external outcomes.

His "molding is self-evidently good" rests on the Burkean/Putnamean premise that 1) hyperindividual march of liberalism is corrosive+alienating 2) institutions provide durable forms of our common life, shared purpose and accomplishing together His book fleshes it out but YMMV

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in this discussion, if that is an option. I am (mediocre) researcher and practitioner of urban, and I am always eager to soak up more learning. Thanks!
