Poll: Have the divergent Covid experiences of Asia and the West made you doubt the western liberal democratic model more than you did a year ago?

We need capitalism specifically so we are not vulnerable to our centralized failure. Taiwan has much more freedom than China and China's outcomes were much worse. Japan had the best response. Strong engineering background. A free world would have @reflow_labs + @getchroma.

It was remarkable that the US used the atom bomb to end WWII, and realized it was good for virtually nothing else. Will world realize that dictatorships are helpful for pandemics and virtually nothing else? My big fear is overgeneralization.

The thuggery and recklessness of the PRC government at multiple levels resulted in ignoring decades of warnings about "wildlife agriculture" and the refusal to face the growing disaster. /1

The local and provincial authorities were more afraid of angering Beijing than of triggering a global pandemic. /2

Was already questioning them before COVID. But think mostly driven by Taiwan which feels like a unique modern semi-utopia even before COVID

A lot of my expat friends in Taiwan Vietnam and Thailand all assumed Asia would get crushed by the virus and west would be better. But it’s hard to figure out any one reason or a set of ideas to explain it fully

No, we did fine in New Zealand. The lockdown held because the social contract also still holds here. It’s not incompatible with liberal democracy, though that is clearly under attack from authoritarianism all over.
