You could also just say how it made you feel/react rather than how it was useful. “That joke made me laugh” as opposed to “you are a funny person” or worst “you have a great sense of humor”

Ie: how do you know I like my funny side? Maybe I dislike it as a sign of insecurity. Or maybe being funny to you is a bad sign for me because I’m trying to impress Jerry Seinfeld level people. Etc etc. Centering personal reactions safely avoids all that.
