Replying to and
Something about people doing that rubs me the wrong way. They’re often badly wrong and it ends up being annoying rather than flattering. A better strategy is to let them know how something they said/did benefitted you and leave the reflecting on strengths to them.

It’s not utilitarian. Nothing to do with utility. Centering your own reaction avoids caging the other person with “praise,” or worse, mistakenly validating an identity they reject, or worst, setting yourself as a judge without knowing whether they even respect your judgment.
