It’s not utilitarian. Nothing to do with utility. Centering your own reaction avoids caging the other person with “praise,” or worse, mistakenly validating an identity they reject, or worst, setting yourself as a judge without knowing whether they even respect your judgment.

If someone tells me their take and they’re badly wrong, I either know right away and/or I have an avenue for a specific reevaluation. It can be both annoying and productive in this case
