Here’s why I think we’re in some sort of dark age: It’s become harder to spot stars and constellations in the zeitgeist to navigate by. I don’t mean memes like “jealous boyfriend.” I mean broad themes like sociopathy or premium mediocrity that are all over zeitgeist for a while.

One thought I am mulling is if fiction takes on a different role in a dark age. Instead of holding up a mirror to society to capture the macro patterns, it begins to play more of a wayfinding role.

Had the same thought when I watched that episode. interestingly it also explains "conspiracy theories" quite well. Take a look at the ganzfeld effect. Imagine that each constellation had at least 1 bright star and you start to see how odd, but cohesive narratives start to form.

In addition to this, sensory deprivation is definitely a stressor, what intrigues me is that there are sets of memeplexes that, even in macro darkness will provide an antitode to that, often shifting deprivation generated anxiety into another column that..https://www.discovermagazine.com/health/floating-away-the-science-of-sensory-deprivation-therapy …

One of the things I'm still trying to get a sense of is if there's going to be an explosion of cultural/memetic production post-COVID or an implosion. Carrying along the "dark age" metaphor, does everyone keep on going deeper into mansions/city-states/homecrafts mindset?

The other possibility is a full-on pivot to Brave New World-style bacchanal/somatic mindset to compensate for COVID shutdowns. Folks want to party, but what kind of party will be thrown?
