There is an unexamined assumption that the US state is not capturable this way, but then nobody has really tried to capture it. The conceit that the constitution is divinely perfect makes me suspect the thing is just a pile of exploits just waiting to be hacked.

It reminds me of all the times the space shuttle unknowingly *almost* exploded and they didn’t even realize it; it was only in hindsight after 2 shuttle explosions that they realized that lack of disasters for the shuttle didnt mean it was safe, just that they got lucky

The correct analogy would be if every component had sensors and NASA employed well resourced forensic teams that competitively studied the data for vulnerabilities and reported results to interested public.

I agree strongly w most of this thread but differ here. I think salient near misses tend to be beneficial rather than harmful as they motivate good actors to patch the most critical vulnerabilities.
