I’ve had an opposite perception of feeling the past 4yrs encouraged conformity. Polarization made it easier to see people in binary terms of being either for/against something odious, and strong political movements incentivized adherence to their beliefs over independent thought.

I agree. It seems to me that in this period I have more often amplified centrist ideas and more frequently have avoided being outspoken on matters where my ideas are weird outliers.
