The geographic segregation of voting patterns is utterly remarkable. What is it about cities that makes people reliably Democrat past a critical size/density? And to what extent is coastal blueness explained by greater urbanization (almost entirely I suspect)

Cities historically grow around trade, so are inherently multicultural. They grow by immigration, same consequence. Urban values are cosmopolitan and cities select for people with those kinds of values.

Greater abstraction of function along with weaker community/family ties leads to greater reliance on institutions. Greater freedom, more entertainment options, and greater variety of perspectives ennoble openness and moral ambiguity. Jefferson saw such effects and hated cities.
