When you operate in clean competitive domains where win/lose is clear, you start to conflate winning and losing with being right versus being wrong. When you move to ambiguous domains with no such clean competitive conditions, this turns into a bias.

Winning (and losing) is psycho-social noise. Like noise in sensors, it can change the trajectory of your spaceship. Winning (and losing) influences our perception of reality, our ascertainment of ideas, and, accordingly, our moral judgements, our plans and our actions.
