There was much more competition this year for sports fan attention. The finals never had to compete with football. Add MLB playoffs to a lesser extent. And the schedule was not optimized for viewership, but instead wrapping up a season ASAP.

US is still recovering from the loss of Michael Jordan. Though, his departure coincided with the internet boom (aka no more TV lock-in). AFAIK, intl. viewership has never been higher. My read: cultural relevance also at all-time high. I like Epsilon, but this is a terrible take.

Fans have liked the trend because it makes the game’s pace more exciting. It’s also easier to emulate Steph Curry’s shooting on the playground than Jordan’s dunking. But since every team plays the same now, people want to see who innovates and finds a way to beat that.
