This evening’s shitposting theme... witchcraft, magick, prayers vs spells etc... Here’s a unifying diagnostic question: do you have a preference for science fiction over fantasy, and if so why do you think that is given the null hypothesis that both are equally escapist?

Love fantasy, Tolkien is one of my formative texts. All I can offer is the ex post facto justification: fantasy/magic/etc feels more amenable to the deeply irreducible ... the insufficiency of explanation is a core principle held somewhat sacred

Similar. All things being equal, the less logical/consistent (or rather, consistent is fine but in a truly surreal, dreamlike way) that magic is presented the more real it feels to me. Too systematic & it's more of a cartoon (albeit often fun) in the shallow sense of the word.pic.twitter.com/eGnySaKTi6

Used to be the same, loved cyberpunk, techno-realism, & the speculative singularity myths supposedly based on current science. But now I know it's only modern myth making & so I'm more comfortable enjoying fantasy, magical realism, etc. knowing it's all fiction at some point.

Google Stephen Donaldson's EPIC FANTASY IN THE MODERN WORLD for a short essay from an accomplished writer of both genres that addresses this question

I have a preference for talking animals and fantastic beasts wherever they occur.
