And yet there are urban planners and architects and model railroaders and ... what's the collective noun for domino-setter-uppers... and entire hobbiest scenes around slow-reward games. Also gardeners, for that matter, which I've heard described as "the slowest performance art."

But you don’t knock down model cities or burn down gardens. It’s not long effort per se. It’s ratio of reward schedule length to effort schedule length. A garden you boot up in 2 years can last centuries with just marginal maintenance effort.
