Haven’t been following this but sounds like just as science has Science!™ history now has History!™ to contend with. In a way this is like the (re)privatization* of scholarship. Maybe I can start my own store brands too 🤔 * Public, institutional scholarship is fairly young

High-commercial value/high capex scholarship has already been privatized (pharmaceuticals, genomics, cloud computing and AI), so why not all scholarship? Peer review is already mostly a ceremonial joke, replication is in crisis, it’s all vulnerable to capture anyway.

There’s never actually been a period when institutional scholarship ever operated in the spirit of open, international cooperation it aspires to. Cold War, north-south divide... it’s always been continental drift and political alliances. Maybe give up pretending.

“University” is a bad word though. Has pretensions to universality that it doesn’t live up to. Maybe “school” 🤔
