Weird thing is it often sincere. Like a child accusing a parent of wanting to eat all the candy. Inability to conceive of intentions more sophisticated than your own. Adjacent to Dunning-Kruger.

This Tom Gauld joke is part of that dynamic. Simpler goals are more robust so the beget a false confidence in the fakeness/hypocrisy of more fragile goals.

Increasing the number of judges definitely has the potential to unbalance the system in a very different way from refusing to confirm. They're just two different concepts. Both are constitutional, and both could be done for good or bad reasons. But only one is court-packing.

Seems like a form of psychological projection - in this case of guilt. Justifying your actions and the subsequent projection by ‘if I don’t do it, somebody else will’ logic.
